The Challenge of Choice
An Engaging Workshop on Making Insightful and Critical Decisions
Whatever else it produces, an organization is first and foremost a factory that manufactures judgments and decisions. Every factory must have ways to ensure the quality of its products. ~ Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow
Do you (or your organization) have a process to ensure the quality of your decisions?
Organizations tend to believe that innovation and decisions are often the responsibility of a few highly-positioned people, but a broad understanding of the challenges to making and executing sound decisions will dramatically increase the input and productivity of any organization’s most valuable asset … the people who make it go, because even if a “good” decision has been made it still must be executed and therein lies one of the keys to gaining a competitive advantage.
When it comes to making major decisions, most people (and organizations) are under the assumption that they won’t know if they’ve made a good decision until they know the outcome.
This line of thinking is completely backward.
If you cannot make a major decision with anything less than 100% certainty (that you have made a good decision), then it’s NOT decision making … it’s gambling!
It’s not natural to mistrust our brain and yet making “good” decisions – in our modern world – requires that we overrule the very programming that has insured our survival as a species. The only way to overcome this false “certainty” is through a clear understanding of what really drives our decision-making process.
This workshop will take you on a fascinating journey into the inner workings of the human mind, where you will discover – through first-hand experience – how your decisions are really made, and why you can be most vulnerable to decisional error precisely when your confidence is at it highest.
At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
➤ Understand how to overcome the intuitive biases, assumptions and heuristics that unwittingly corrupt our choices, judgments, decisions and beliefs
➤ Determine the difference between “feeling” right and “being” right when making critical decisions
➤ Share a common vocabulary that will identify and diagnose errors in judgment
➤ Become a more cohesive team that will challenge each other to make “good” decisions
➤ Effectively use The 7 Steps to the Anatomy of a Good Decision to make a “good” decision with 100% confidence … no second guessing
My name is Richard Fast; I am an author and creator of a number of books and programs, but first and foremost I would describe myself as an ardent researcher and a voracious reader. As an entrepreneur I created MindTrap® games and more than 20 other toys and games that sold millions of copies worldwide, however, with success often comes hubris. After making some “questionable” and costly business decisions due to intuition and “false” confidence, I was determined to find out what really drives our choices, judgments, decisions and beliefs. This workshop is about instilling those incites, because no skill is more valuable – and harder to come by – than the ability to solve problems and think critically.
